Precautions When Handling Chemical Cleaning Agents
Cleaning stainless steel sometimes require the use of corrosive chemicals like solvents, acids and chlorides. If you are using these, you need to follow precautionary measures.
A lot of stainless steel cleaning agents use chloride, hypochlorite or bleach. When your washing solutions consist of these, you need to rinse the steel right away. Remember, you have to do it well to get rid of the chemicals completely. This goes especially for steel cookware and utensils.
If you use solvents for cleaning stainless steel, you should not use it within confined spaces. The vapours can cause nausea and dizziness. You should also avoid smoking or lighting matches if you are using such solvents.
When you are using acids, do not forget to wear safety glasses and gloves. You should also be careful in handling these liquids to avoid spills. When diluting these corrosives, add the acid solution to water and not the other way around. You should also only use containers that are resistant to acids, such as plastic or glass. After treating the stainless steel item with such fluids, rinse it well with water.
